Marketing for small business

Copy that sings

I craft your voice and your ideas into words that inspire and inform your audience

Whether you are grappling with the dreaded blank page or have reams of words that you need someone to wrangle into submission, I can help. I believe that the way we present our brands in the written form is an essential element to cutting through to our intended audiences, whether those audiences are customers, website visitors, boards, grant committees or even internal stakeholders. The process of each copywriting project, regardless of size or depth, also can assist you in clarifying your own ideas and objectives.

For each writing project, I work with you in the first instance to develop your brief and our shared understanding of the:

  • preferred format;

  • budget;

  • audience(s);

  • brand style; and

  • desired outcomes.

Communications Strategy

marketing communications

You know your organisation inside and out and are itching to talk to customers - so, where to start?

Marketing communication is often touted as simply “having a conversation” with your customers or clients. Whilst that is true, it is also too simplistic an idea for most small to medium organisations who have limited time, budget and resources to communicate with their audience in a way that is effective, efficient and authentic. To set out a strategy for how to tackle marketing communications, I help my clients address some key questions:

  1. what are you going to say?

  2. who are you saying it to?

  3. when/how often are you saying it to them?

  4. how do you reach them?

  5. how do you effectively listen to them?

I work with you to answer these questions over three stages: a Business & Marketing Review, Strategy Workshop and delivery of a Marketing Communications & Content Roadmap - this roadmap will be a living, breathing document that allows you and your staff to confidently do the work and move forward in all aspects of your communications.

Coaching & Training

coaching and training

Not all organisations can afford a Marketing Manager, let alone a Marketing Department and that’s ok! I am firmly of the belief that everything you do in your business is marketing and it is imperative, especially in smaller organisations, that your people have an appreciation of what good marketing is and what they can do in their day to day jobs to enhance customer experience and meet the organisation’s strategic goals.

Training or coaching programs not only benefit your organisation, they also directly contribute to the development and wellbeing of your people. To give, say, your administration staff an understanding of how they can contribute to the organisation’s marketing effort gives them a sense of ownership over their work and relationships with customers and suppliers. It also gives you their unique perspective on strategic direction. Put simply, an understanding of marketing opens doors for everyone.

For any training or coaching I do with my clients, it is essential that we all have a good working understanding of your organisation, its objectives, marketing environment and clients or stakeholders. This Business & Marketing Review helps make sure everyone is on the same page and helps to focus our collective efforts.

Put simply, an understanding of marketing opens doors for everyone.

From that point, your organisation can opt for one or both of the following:

  • a training program for individuals or small groups on relevant marketing communications concepts and how they can put them into practice in their respective roles

  • a coaching program for individuals - working within agreed objectives (both personal and strategic), I provide coaching (via phone, video call or visit) on a weekly or “as needs” basis for 3-month blocks.

Marketing consulting

Once a week, once a fortnight, once a month or once in a blue moon….

There are times in every organisation when you need to call on some expert know-how - that’s where I come in. I’ve been working in marketing for 20 years: within organisations, for my own businesses and as a consultant. I’ve enjoyed success in varied industries: from professional services, sport and hospitality, to community organisations, medical and large scale events. My approach has always been to begin projects by developing a deep understanding of both the organisation and the target market, whether they be customers, members, clients, sponsors or donors.

I help my clients with all aspects of their marketing effort including:

  • Development and design of marketing collateral (print and online)

  • Development of visual identity, brand, and voice

  • Copywriting and communications

  • Managing website content

  • Training and team support

  • Social media management

  • Social media advertising

  • Working with your team’s collaborative environment including Asana, Miro, Slack, Airtable etc.

  • Email design and communications (including automations)

  • Analytics and reporting

I enjoy helping my clients to set up systems to make their businesses run smoother or provide them with marketing consulting services on an ad hoc or regular basis, so let’s have an informal chat about what you need and whether I can help you get where you need to go.
